How Do You Even Want to Want to?

How Do You Even Want to Want to?

That is the question I keep asking myself.

The computer age passed me by. When I was attending Purdue University in the early 70’s no one had a personal computer. I had the first digital clock on our floor in the dorm. At that time, it was advanced technology. I remember someone calling out “what time is it,” and I replied 11:23. Their remark was, “who’s the smart ass.” No one ever said the exact time. It was either a quarter after 11 or 11:30. Everyone came running to my room to see this amazing new clock that I had.

I entered the work force and still the only skill I needed was how to use an electric typewriter. Shortly after that, I married and stayed home taking care of the house and children. I never needed to learn how to use a computer. At the age of 55 I went to work. I volunteered at what was then known as Three Treasures Wellness Center (now known as Pure Health Acupuncture). During the last 7 years there have been many incidents where knowing how to operate a computer would have come in handy.

As the years progressed, the pressure was put on me to be able to use a computer. I fought it because I didn’t want to. One day, a tutor came to teach me about basic computer knowledge. Day one went okay. I was not excited but hung in there. It was day 2 that sent me into an emotional uproar. I screamed, “I don’t even want to want to learn about computers.” It was then that I asked myself the question, “How do you even want to want to?”

I needed something to motivate me to want to, a desire of some kind that would create the need to use a computer. I was really lonely one day, I was missing my best friend. The person I worked with said “Why don’t you learn to blog? That would help connect you to many people.” At last, I had my reason to learn. It was to connect with people so I wouldn’t feel  lonely!

It’s not fun sometimes, but I have the motivation to stick to it. This principal can work for anything in your life you are struggling with right now. Take dieting, for example. Some people can’t get motivated to lose weight. They know that they want to look better or feel better but it isn’t enough to get them started. Even though diabetes runs in their family, or their dad died of a heart attack, or they already have high blood pressure, it still isn’t enough. But then, their little boy or girl looks up at them and says “I love you,” and in their heart they now have the reason to want to want to. It’s different for everyone, you just have to find a desire that will work for you. We are all uniquely and wonderfully made. What works for me might not work for you. Search your heart’s desires and learn to use them to benefit you in whatever you want to accomplish.

Feel free to comment below, I would love to get to know you and see what you think.

Be blessed,

Bobbi

Nice. Makes me wonder what it is that I might want to.
